Buying a standard hitch can be a pretty simple process depending on your tow needs, but if you need something that offers a lot of versatility for an affordable price, any particular kind of hitch just won’t do.
This is made even more difficult if you have several types of trailers that you need to tow. With a standard ball hitch setup, you would have to ensure that its measurements are compatible with each trailers’ couplers, and if it wasn’t, you would have to change it out. This can waste time and manpower when all you really need is a good tow and stow hitch setup.
Trust that your Pharr truck accessory experts at Camco Wheel & Axle have the insider knowledge of the towing industry and can recommend the right tow and stow you need to get the job done. When looking for it, do consider the following.
1. Choose the Right Shank
Determining the size of the shank is one of the biggest deciding factors in your search for that perfect stow and tow hitch setup. It has to fit your work truck’s receiver in order to tow your trailer, but even if it doesn’t, you can still fit the shank into the truck’s receiver with a reducer sleeve. If you do, however, you are effectively decreasing the amount of weight your vehicle can tow.
That’s why we would recommend opting in for that perfect fit instead to maximize the amount of weight your work truck can safely tow. To do this, measure the inside of your receiver from the top inner lip to the bottom inner lip with a tape measure. The measurement of that space is the optimal thickness you will want for the size of the shank.
2. Make Sure You Get the Right Ball Size
The greatest thing about a proper tow and stow is that most models have an interchangeable set of ball hitches. This is where the tool’s true versatility truly shines.
Take a look at the trailer you want to tow, specifically looking at the coupler in the front that attaches to the ball hitch. You should see a label that gives the specific measurement the ball hitch needs to be in order to properly fit it to your work truck.
The benefit of tow and stow brands like B&W is that they come with multiple ball hitches in different sizes that you can unlatch and swivel to whatever correct size you need for your coupler. This is great if you have multiple trailers to tow that have different ball sizes.
3. Figure Out Your Drop
Measuring the drop on your truck and trailer are important. If the two aren’t balanced, it could make the whole towing process a rocky one from the start, which can compromise whatever equipment you are towing or even cause an accident.
First, you will want to place your work truck on a flat, level surface and measure from the top lip of your receiver to the ground with your tape measure. After that, place a leveler on the neck of your trailer’s coupler to make sure it is level, and take a measurement from the bottom of your coupler down to the ground.
Finally, subtract the two measurements, and that is the drop you need. To illustrate this, consider that the measurement from your work truck’s receiver to the ground is 24 inches, and the distance between your trailer’s coupler from the ground is 17 inches. Then, simply subtract the two values, and the amount of drop you will need in a tow and stow is 7 inches. The beauty of a good tow and stow is that they can accommodate the drop on your work truck and trailer and later be adjusted to fit a different trailer.
