Popped tires on a trailer – especially when stranded on the side of the road – can be downright frustrating. A well-made jack is exactly what you need to get your utility trailer and commercial vehicle out of a bad situation.
Your team at Camco Wheel & Axle have got your back, with a big selection of commercial vehicle and utility trailer parts including quality jacks. Buying one of them ensures that you won’t have to leave your trailer on the side of the road or wait for another fleet member to bring one to you.
How to Select a Jack That’s Right for You
When you are selecting the right jack for your trailer, keep in mind that you won’t need something that can lift the whole trailer. You’ll need something that can exceed the tongue weight of the trailer when it’s loaded.
The tongue weight of the trailer is usually calculated at around 10 to 15 percent of the trailer’s weight. One thing you will want to do is find the gross trailer weight rating (GTWR), which is the total weight that your trailer can handle. You can find this rating on the label on your trailer.
Under 5,000 Pounds
If the GTWR is under 5,000 pounds, you’ll want a jack that can handle that weight. A TJD-5000S will get the job done. It has a life capacity of 3,000 pounds and support capacity of 5,000 pounds. The square tube it has provides more side load capacity compared to round tube models and it is a direct weld-on installation, meaning it is welded to the frame of the trailer.
The drop leg adds an additional 13 ½ or so inches aside from the jack—also know as “travel”—so it can really lift your trailer off of the ground. It also has a pin that is inserted into the holes or notches to secure the drop leg at your desired height or position.
Under 12,000 Pounds
For heavier trailers that have a GTWR under 12,000 pounds, you’ll need a sturdier piece of equipment. The TJD-12000SP-F will get you where you want to go. It has a lift capacity of up to 10,000 pounds and can support 12,000.
The drop leg has 12 ½ inches of travel and it also has a pull pin for security. This heavy-duty piece also welds onto the frame. If you need a different jack for your specific vehicle or utility trailer, our office is more than happy to recommend jack models that can address your needs.
Like a solid trailer jack, Camco Wheel & Axle is here to support you.
Of course, those aren’t the only types that we have in our selection. If you need something smaller in capacity, we also have a 750 pounds capacity jack. Contact us at (956) 781-4800 for more information on the utility trailer parts we have in stock.
